Cattermole retired from professional football in 2019 following a brief stint with Dutch club VVV-Venlo. After retiring, the 35-year-old transitioned into coaching, starting with Middlesbrough’s academy. He led the U23 team before stepping away in February 2023.
Cattermole also briefly served on Middlesbrough’s interim management team during Chris Wilder’s departure in October 2022.
