Former Premier League midfielder Lee Cattermole has secured his first permanent coaching role, joining Bristol Rovers as a first-team coach. Cattermole, who will focus on set-piece development and implementation, expressed his excitement about the club’s project, citing discussions with staff and George Friend as influential in his decision.

Cattermole retired from professional football in 2019 following a brief stint with Dutch club VVV-Venlo. Before that, he spent a decade with Sunderland, amassing 262 appearances, and played for Middlesbrough and Wigan. After retiring, the 35-year-old transitioned into coaching, starting with Middlesbrough’s academy. He led the U23 team before stepping away in February 2023.

Cattermole also briefly served on Middlesbrough’s interim management team during Chris Wilder’s departure in October 2022. Bristol Rovers, currently 18th in the League One standings, will benefit from Cattermole’s expertise as they look to improve their performance. The team faces a challenging fixture against title contenders Birmingham City this Saturday.
