Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has remained without a managerial role since being dismissed by Manchester United in November 2021. He recently turned down an opportunity to return to management with Molde. Leif-Arne Langøy, the president of the Norwegian club, reached out to Solskjaer after parting ways with Erling Moe following a loss to Fredrikstad in the cup final, which meant Molde would miss out on European football next season. However, Solskjaer did not respond to Langøy’s approach, as reported by VG.
While Solskjaer has been linked to multiple managerial positions both at club and international levels this year, he has yet to accept a new role. Reports suggest he had discussions with Sweden and Canada and came close to securing the Leicester job when Enzo Maresca left for Chelsea. However, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Solskjaer’s former teammate at United, was appointed after Steve Cooper was dismissed following a brief tenure at the King Power.
Solskjaer has spoken about his future, expressing interest in managing Norway. In an interview with Norwegian radio NRK podcast Bakrommet, he said, “I am a proud Norwegian. If the opportunity arises when Stale no longer wants it, I would be open to a conversation. I would say yes immediately. It feels odd to talk about positions held by others, but of course, I would accept. No, I’m not waiting for it, though. First and foremost, nothing beats Norway qualifying for a major tournament. If we make it to the World Cup in 2026, then it’s time. That’s what we all hope for, and we hope it happens as soon as possible, while Stale is still in charge.”
The 51-year-old also shared what would draw him back into management: “It has to be something exciting, alongside the right people. But I feel so content now that it would need to be something significant for me to leave Nordmore. I think a national team role could suit me, but not one far away. I had two options, but the travel time was half a day, and with the time difference, I decided against it, even though it would have meant participating in the championship.”
Solskjaer appears in no hurry to return to management but could potentially be an option for Norway once current manager Stale Solbakken steps down after the 2026 World Cup. In the meantime, the United legend is likely watching closely to see how his former club fares under new manager Ruben Amorim.
