Antony’s time in Manchester has been underwhelming, with the Brazilian winger failing to live up to expectations since his £85 million ($108m) move from Ajax in 2022. In his 89 appearances, he has managed only 12 goals, a return that doesn’t justify his hefty price tag. This season, his only goal came from the penalty spot during a 7-0 win over Barnsley in the EFL Cup.
New manager Ruben Amorim is still assessing his squad, but former assistant coach Rene Meulensteen, who worked under Sir Alex Ferguson, believes United should consider parting ways with Antony in January. Meulensteen claims that Antony’s personality doesn’t mesh well with some of his teammates, among other concerns he raised.
“Manchester United may need to cut their losses with Antony in January,” Meulensteen told Lucky Block. “I don’t think he has what Ruben Amorim needs. It’s hard to see where he fits into this team. He’s been one of the most disappointing transfers in the Premier League in recent years.
“He’s a player from the Dutch league, where you can win easily without breaking a sweat, but in the Premier League, you need to perform at a top level every game. The biggest issue with Antony, though, is his personality. He has traits that don’t sit well with some of the other players. Beyond that, his effectiveness as a player is lacking—he’s predictable, always cutting in on his left foot. We don’t see many assists or chances created from him, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him leave by the end of January.”
Antony featured in last month’s Europa League win against Bodo/Glimt, and he is expected to play again on Thursday as Amorim’s side, currently 12th in the league phase table, aim to improve their position.
