Thomas Muller was deployed as Bayern Munich’s central striker in the absence of Harry Kane, with Jamal Musiala providing support from behind. Bayern quickly took control of the match, but it was Shakhtar Donetsk who struck first in the fifth minute, with Kevin finishing off a fast counter-attack for the opening goal.

However, the hosts’ lead was short-lived, as Konrad Laimer equalized just six minutes later. Kevin, who had scored Shakhtar’s goal, lost possession in his own half, allowing Muller to send a perfect pass to Michael Olise. Despite a challenge in the box, Olise flicked the ball to Laimer, who slotted it home calmly.

Following Laimer’s quick equalizer, Bayern intensified their efforts but missed several chances in the first half, including a near-miss from Muller. He failed to convert a close-range effort from Leroy Sane’s heel pass just before halftime. The veteran attacker made up for his earlier miss in the 46th minute, putting Bayern ahead after a Musiala assist.

Shakhtar had a golden opportunity to equalize early in the second half when Artem Bondarenko faced an open net, but his shot was blocked by Muller, who made a crucial defensive play.

The Ukrainian side’s missed chance proved costly, as Bayern extended their lead in the 70th minute when Olise converted a controversial penalty, awarded after Alaa Ghram fouled Sacha Boey.

Musiala then added a fourth goal in the 87th minute, and Olise completed the scoring with his second goal.

Without Kane, it was Muller who took the spotlight, scoring a goal and making a vital block in Bayern’s penalty area. Although the 35-year-old showed some early rust, he made significant contributions, including a goal in the first half and a crucial defensive intervention to keep Shakhtar from levelling.

Bondarenko’s missed opportunity, which could have brought his team back into the game, was one of the easiest chances of the match. After his failed attempt, he appeared visibly disappointed and was substituted shortly after.

Next, Vincent Kompany’s team will turn their attention to the Bundesliga, where they remain unbeaten. Their next match will be an away fixture against Mainz on Saturday.
