Former Manchester United and Netherlands goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar recently opened up about his health journey following a brain hemorrhage he suffered last July while on holiday in Croatia. In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports News, van der Sar shared his experience and discussed his future in football.
Van der Sar recalled waking up on the last day of his holiday feeling unwell. He experienced discomfort in his neck and shoulder blades, followed by nausea and sensitivity to light. Recognizing the symptoms from his wife Annemarie’s previous experience with a brain hemorrhage, he quickly sought medical help. He was diagnosed with a brain hemorrhage and spent two weeks in the hospital before being released from intensive care.
Van der Sar expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support he received from fans and the football community. “First of all, we want to thank everyone for all the great and supportive messages,” he said in a heartfelt Instagram post. “I’m happy to share that I’m no longer in the intensive care unit. However, I’m still in hospital. I hope to go home next week and take the next step in my recovery!”
When asked about his future in football, van der Sar remained optimistic but cautious. “I’m still recovering, and it’s a bit early to say for sure,” he admitted. “But I love the game, and I hope to stay involved in some capacity, whether it’s through coaching, mentoring, or working behind the scenes.”
Van der Sar’s journey back to health has been a testament to his resilience and the support of his loved ones and fans. As he continues to recover, the football world eagerly awaits his next steps and contributions to the sport he has always been passionate about.
