Liverpool have made their first move to secure Mohamed Salah’s future, offering a contract extension to his representatives in a bid to keep him at Anfield beyond this summer, when his current deal expires, according to The Athletic. Salah has been outstanding for the Reds this season, but in late November, he stirred controversy by publicly criticizing the club for their lack of action regarding his contract situation. It appears his concerns may have prompted this move, although a final agreement between Liverpool and Salah is still some way off.

After helping Liverpool to a win over Southampton, Salah told reporters, “We’re almost in December, and I haven’t received any offers to stay at the club. I’m probably more out than in. I’ve been at this club for many years, and there’s no place like it. But ultimately, it’s not up to me. As I said, it’s December, and I haven’t heard anything about my future. I love the fans, and the fans love me, but it’s not just up to us. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Salah continued his fine form in Liverpool’s last match against Newcastle, scoring twice to take his tally to 13 goals and 8 assists in just 14 games, sending the Reds to the top of the Premier League. The Egyptian seems to be improving with age, making it clear why Liverpool is keen to hold on to him. The club is also in talks with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, both of whom are in the final year of their contracts.

It remains uncertain whether Liverpool will manage to keep Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold beyond this season. Negotiations will continue throughout the year, but the players will be free to negotiate with other clubs in January, potentially moving on a Bosman deal in the summer. As Liverpool leads the Premier League, the club has a lot to focus on, both in their pursuit of another title and in ensuring the future of their key stars.
