United shocked fans by announcing Ashworth’s unexpected departure on Sunday, only five months after his appointment. Sources indicate that INEOS played a role in his exit, leading to widespread criticism of Ratcliffe for allowing the former England director to leave.

Ashworth had a key role in United’s £200 million ($254m) summer spending, but the club’s performance this season has been dismal, including the firing of Erik ten Hag. They currently sit 13th in the Premier League after a 3-2 home loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

United’s next match in the Premier League is against Manchester City next weekend, but they will first face Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on Thursday.
