Amorim clarifies team decision on LGBTQ+ support jackets amid Mazraoui’s objection

Manchester United's players opted not to wear special LGBTQ+ support jackets before their recent 4-0 win over Everton after Noussair Mazraoui declined due to his Muslim faith.

The Red Devils had planned to wear a special Adidas jacket in support of the LGBTQ+ community ahead of their 4-0 victory over Everton last weekend. However, the initiative was shelved after Noussair Mazraoui declined to participate, citing his Muslim faith. To avoid singling out the Moroccan international, head coach Ruben Amorim decided that none of the players would wear the jacket.

Amorim explained the decision during a press conference, saying: “It was a collective decision by the players, as it should be. We had three key factors to consider: the club’s values, which everyone agrees on; the importance of respecting religion; and, most importantly, team unity. We couldn’t leave Nous [Mazraoui] isolated. The majority of the players shared one perspective, but they stood together to support a teammate. Managing these aspects—club values, religion, and group cohesion—is challenging, but I believe we handled it well. This club stands for respect, including for Nous’ religion and culture.”

This issue has fueled broader discussions over the past week about balancing the promotion of socially progressive values with respecting players’ religious beliefs. Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi recently wrote Christian messages on his Rainbow armband during two matches, while Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy chose not to wear one at all, citing religious reasons. Both players were warned by the Football Association but faced no further sanctions, sparking debate on the subject.

Amorim’s United team, currently 13th in the Premier League, will face seventh-placed Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening at Old Trafford.
