Former Bayern Munich midfielder Dietmar Hamann, who had stints in England with Liverpool and Manchester City, has frequently questioned Harry Kane’s impact for both club and country this season. The England captain is accused of disappearing in crucial moments, especially in high-pressure games when his contribution is most needed.
Despite this criticism, Kane, 31, has once again reached 20 goals this season and has extended his record-breaking tally for England to 69 goals and counting. Many regard him as one of the top No.9s in world football, but Hamann continues to highlight flaws in his game.
Speaking to Genting Casino, Hamann discussed Kane’s role in the England team as Thomas Tuchel prepares to take over as manager. He remarked, “He scores goals in Germany, but many of those are penalties. The question about his future is legitimate. Will Kane still be able to lead the line at the World Cup? Sometimes, when I watch him, he doesn’t look right. I’m not sure what it is, but his performances, especially for England, haven’t been great. The big question is whether he’ll be the number one striker for England in the summer of 2026. I have serious doubts about that, and it will be a decision for the manager to make.”
Hamann continued, “Tuchel is a big fan of Kane, and I don’t think he will drop him from the team. But with players like Dominic Solanke and Ollie Watkins, the game changes. A quick centre-forward alters the dynamic – they can run past defenders, and I’m not sure Kane has that ability. He’s certainly slower than he was five years ago. That’s just not his style of play.”
Kane’s game has never been about speed; instead, it’s his remarkable ability to find and convert chances that has made him one of the most lethal forwards in the world. The consensus is that Tuchel, the former Bayern manager, will find a place for Kane in his plans for 2025 and beyond.
