There is considerable speculation surrounding Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future, as the England international is approaching the final year of his contract. As it stands, he will become a free agent in 2025, allowing him to negotiate with clubs outside the Premier League starting in January.

A Merseyside native and a product of Liverpool’s renowned academy, Alexander-Arnold has made nearly 330 appearances for his boyhood club. While he will always have a strong emotional connection to Liverpool, his professional ties may be tested as he approaches a pivotal moment in his career.

When asked if a move to Spain might be on the horizon, especially with fellow England international Jude Bellingham already at Real Madrid, former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey told GOAL, in partnership with William Hill: “It’s possible, yeah. We’ve seen it before, like with [Steve] McManaman, who ran down his contract and then moved there. The influence of top Spanish clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona is huge, especially when players are linked to other stars. Players’ minds will always wander, no matter which club they’re at, in any league. With his mate already there, Alexander-Arnold could definitely see himself making that move.”

Having won a host of major trophies with Liverpool, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and others, Alexander-Arnold is now eyeing another domestic title this season. Heskey further commented on whether Alexander-Arnold might seek a new challenge after achieving so much at Anfield: “One hundred percent. Every player reaches a point where they ask, ‘What’s next?’ I was at Leicester, where we reached three cup finals in four years, and I had to look ahead to the next challenge. For Trent, he’s 26, and while another league title is possible, he’s likely asking, ‘What’s the next step?’ He could become a global star in Spain and add to his trophy collection. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s also considering the Ballon d’Or.”

Real Madrid’s illustrious history of nurturing Ballon d’Or winners, including legends like Cristiano Ronaldo, Alfredo Di Stefano, and Luka Modric, may entice Alexander-Arnold. Known for his ability to move into midfield from right-back, he could see a move to the Spanish giants as a chance to compete for the title of the world’s best player.
