After England’s Euro 2024 final loss to Spain in Berlin, Gareth Southgate stepped down as head coach, prompting the Football Association (FA) to start searching for a successor. England U21 coach Lee Carsley was named interim manager until last month, when the FA confirmed that former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel would take charge, becoming only the third non-English coach to lead the national team as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup.
Former England manager Sam Allardyce has criticized the FA’s choice of a foreign coach, suggesting it disregards the organization’s commitment to developing English coaches. He argued that by selecting Tuchel, the FA has undermined the mission of St. George’s Park, which opened in 2012 as a center for developing English coaches for future roles, including potentially leading the national team.
Speaking to Betfair, Allardyce said, “The FA has let English coaches down, and here’s why: when I joined England briefly, they were pushing everyone towards St. George’s Park, a brilliant infrastructure initiative that extended to the senior level. The vision was to cultivate English coaches to eventually lead the national team. Now, that vision feels abandoned.”
Allardyce also pointed out the limited opportunities for English coaches, especially given the Premier League’s heavy presence of foreign managers, owners, and executives. He noted, “As a British coach, your opportunities are slim, not just because of competition but because of the foreign influence within clubs. It’s brought massive revenue into the game, but for an English coach wanting to reach elite levels, the pathway is more challenging than ever.”
Tuchel is not expected to take over until early 2025, so Carsley will manage England’s last two Nations League group-stage games against Greece on November 14 and Ireland on November 17.
