Tottenham Hotspur’s Uruguayan midfielder, Rodrigo Bentancur, is set to miss seven crucial Premier League games after being handed a ban by the Football Association (FA) for making racially insensitive comments about his teammate, Son Heung-min.
The incident occurred during an interview in June. Bentancur was asked by a presenter for a Tottenham shirt, before replying: “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.”
Although he quickly apologized, claiming it was a “very bad joke,” the FA found him guilty of an aggravated breach of conduct.
As a result, Bentancur will be unavailable for the following matches:
Manchester City vs Tottenham – November 23
Tottenham vs Fulham – December 1
Bournemouth vs Tottenham – December 5
Tottenham vs Chelsea – December 8
Tottenham vs Southampton – December 15
Tottenham vs Manchester United (Carabao Cup) – December 19
Tottenham vs Liverpool – December 22
This suspension comes as a significant blow to Tottenham, especially considering Bentancur’s role in the midfield. Manager Ange Postecoglou will now have to navigate these crucial fixtures without one of his key players.
While Bentancur will be absent from domestic competitions, he will still be available for European fixtures, including the Europa League. The club and fans will undoubtedly be hoping for a swift resolution and a return to form for their midfielder.
The FA are set to hit Bentancur with a 7 game ban for making a racist remark about South Koreans while on Uruguayan TV.
When the interviewer asked if he could have Son’s jersey, Bentancur replied ‘it could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same’.
