The 24-year-old Uruguayan wing-back Maximiliano Araújo, who made his European debut this summer, scored a goal in Sporting CP’s impressive 4-1 victory over reigning Premier League champions Manchester City in the Champions League last week. Araujo shared that he also approached City manager Pep Guardiola for a photo, leading to a brief conversation between them.
Upon arriving in Uruguay for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, Araujo spoke to reporters about a potential move to Man City, saying: “I hope so, I hope so… I asked him [Guardiola] for a photo, we spoke for a few minutes, and he congratulated me. I’m very happy about that. We only discussed the game, nothing more.”
The former Montevideo Wanderers youth player is keen on following Ruben Amorim to the Premier League. Amorim, who guided Sporting CP to a 4-2 win over Braga in his final match with the club, has since moved to Manchester United, where he has officially taken charge.
For now, Araujo will remain with Sporting CP and will next be in action for the club on November 22, when they face Amarante FC in the Taca de Portugal fourth round.
