Cole Palmer made the move to Chelsea from Manchester City in the summer of 2023, and he has quickly become a key player at Stamford Bridge, scoring 32 goals in 58 appearances across all competitions. His impressive performances for the Blues earned him a spot in England’s squad for Euro 2024, where he scored in the final.
However, Palmer’s rise to stardom at Chelsea almost didn’t happen. He needed to be convinced to make the switch, and then had to wait for the clubs to finalize a £42.5 million ($54 million) transfer deal. After progressing through City’s youth academy, Palmer made 41 senior appearances but was not a regular starter under Pep Guardiola, which led him to seek more playing time at Chelsea.
“I wasn’t even planning to join Chelsea, I had to be persuaded,” Palmer admitted in an interview with GQ. “I knew I wouldn’t get as much game time as I wanted. Even when I was with the England youth teams, I saw players who were playing in the league every week, and I thought, ‘I can do that too.’ It’s frustrating when you’re not playing.”
While Guardiola noted that Palmer had been pushing for a move, Palmer clarified, “No, I actually just wanted to go on loan.”
Palmer was one of eight players to pull out of the England squad due to injury, and it remains uncertain whether he will be fit for Chelsea’s upcoming match against Leicester on November 23.
