Manchester United and England icon David Beckham, who spent time in the U.S. playing for LA Galaxy, is now a co-owner of Inter Miami. Under his ownership, the club achieved a record-breaking points total in 2024, earning the Supporters’ Shield for the first time in franchise history.
With global stars like Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez joining their ranks, many considered Miami the favorites to win the MLS Cup. However, their dream ended in disappointment as they were eliminated in the playoffs by Atlanta in a thrilling best-of-three series.
Atlanta United is relishing its newfound status as “everyone’s favorite team in MLS,” as many rival fans have rallied behind the idea of seeing “anyone but Miami” succeed this season. Rob Valentino’s team is now preparing for a showdown with Orlando City.
After their dramatic 3-2 victory over Inter Miami in the playoff decider at Chase Stadium, Atlanta has taken the opportunity to mock Beckham. The team edited a memorable scene from the Netflix ‘Beckham’ documentary, featuring an exchange between David and his wife Victoria. In the clip, Victoria asserts, “we’re the best in MLS,” to which Beckham replies, “be honest,” before she reluctantly admits that Atlanta United has defeated Miami “multiple times.”
Over the course of their five encounters in 2024, Inter Miami only managed one victory over Atlanta, suffering three losses. Messi, however, will return for the 2025 season, with a year remaining on his contract.
