Incoming Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim reportedly has plans to bring back Alvaro Carreras, a former United academy player sold for £5 million last summer. Amorim, who will leave Sporting CP to join United on November 11, is interested in Carreras as a potential solution to United’s ongoing issues at left-back.
Injuries to Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw have forced United to rotate options in the position, using players like Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui. Carreras, 21, joined United’s academy in 2020 but failed to secure a spot in the senior squad and eventually moved to Benfica after a loan spell.
United included a buy-back clause of £16 million in the transfer agreement, which Amorim may activate to strengthen the left side of his defense. Portuguese football figure Álvaro Magalhães, a five-time league champion, believes Carreras would be an ideal fit for Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, which brought Sporting significant success in recent years.
