Atletico Madrid defender Robin Le Normand, 27, sustained a traumatic brain injury during Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Real Madrid. The Spain international suffered a subdural hematoma, where blood collects between the skull and the surface of the brain, following a head injury late in the match.

Atletico confirmed that specialists assessed him and will follow the established protocol for his return to competition. As a result, Le Normand has not traveled to Portugal for Atletico’s Champions League match against Benfica. Despite reports ruling out a serious injury, his absence is a setback for manager Diego Simeone.

Le Normand has been a key player this season, starting in eight of Atletico’s nine matches. The Madrid derby itself ended in chaos, as fans threw objects at Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois, leading to a 15-minute suspension. Atletico equalized through Angel Correa in stoppage time after the match resumed.
