During the highly anticipated Madrid derby on September 30, 2024, Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois became the target of object-throwing fans, leading to a 15-minute suspension of the match.
The clash between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in La Liga saw home supporters hurl various items, including lighters, primarily aimed at Courtois. With Real Madrid leading 1-0 thanks to Eder Militao’s goal in the second half, the match was forced to pause as the crowd’s behavior escalated. Some Atletico players, including coach Diego Simeone, Koke, and Jose Gimenez, intervened, urging the fans to cease their actions so that the game could continue.
As tensions rose at Atletico’s Metropolitano stadium, the referee sent players from both teams to their dressing rooms while awaiting further decisions, with just over 20 minutes left in the match.
In the end, Atletico Madrid equalized in the 95th minute, as Angel Correa’s goal, following a VAR review that confirmed he was onside, secured a 1-1 draw against the Spanish champions.
Real Madrid played without their injured star, Kylian Mbappe, and maintained control over Atletico for much of the match, taking the lead through Militao’s effort.
After the game, Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone acknowledged that while the fans’ behavior was unacceptable, he also felt that Courtois should not have provoked them with gestures.
