Fabio Vieira set for loan move back to Porto from Arsenal

Fabio Vieira is close to returning to Porto on loan from Arsenal, with discussions underway on including a purchase option. The 24-year-old midfielder was absent from Arsenal’s squad for their match against Aston Villa, as negotiations are in advanced stages.

Vieira joined the Gunners in July 2022 from Porto for £35 million but has struggled to cement his place in Mikel Arteta’s lineup, making 49 appearances across all competitions. The arrival of Mikel Merino and the rise of academy talent Ethan Nwaneri have limited Vieira’s opportunities at Arsenal. Merino’s £28.4 million move from Real Sociedad and Nwaneri’s record-breaking debut as the Premier League’s youngest player in 2022 have pushed Vieira further down the pecking order.

Vieira hopes a successful return to Portugal will help him revive his ambitions of returning to the Emirates and contributing to Arsenal’s title challenge. Reports suggest Porto may secure a clause allowing them to make the move permanent after the season. Vieira made a minimal impact last season, playing just 57 Premier League minutes after recovering from groin surgery.
