Arsenal has reached an agreement to sign Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad for £32.6 million. The 28-year-old will undergo a medical before signing a four-year contract, with an option for a further year. The deal consists of £28.4 million upfront and £4.2 million in add-ons.
Merino, a long-time target of manager Mikel Arteta, is Arsenal’s third signing of the summer, joining David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori in the club’s total summer spending of over £100 million. Arteta was eager to strengthen the midfield after Granit Xhaka’s departure, seeing Merino as a perfect fit. Merino, who played 242 times for Sociedad and earned 28 caps for Spain, helped his national team win Euro 2024.
The transfer was finalized after negotiations between Sociedad and Arsenal, with Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay traveling to London to complete the deal. Merino will add much-needed depth to Arsenal’s midfield, but he is unlikely to feature in the upcoming match against Aston Villa.
