Liverpool’s new chapter under Arne Slot began on a high note as the Reds secured a 2-0 victory over Ipswich in last week’s Premier League clash. Cody Gakpo, eager to excel under the leadership of his fellow countryman, noted that the former Feyenoord manager has quickly won the hearts of both the Merseyside fans and the squad.

Gakpo provided an in-depth comparison between Slot and Liverpool’s previous manager, Jurgen Klopp, who concluded his tenure at the club this summer. Slot had promised a shift in playing style from what Klopp implemented during his nine-year tenure at Anfield, and the effects of this change have been evident from the outset.

In an interview with Via Play via Sport Nieuws, Gakpo remarked, “A lot has changed compared to Klopp, but he makes a very good impression. It is not necessarily better or worse, but it has mainly changed. Last season it was more from the counter, but that is only advantageous. We will soon have mastered both systems. That can take us far.”

He added, “He (Slot) is just very honest and direct, which is beneficial to players. Then you always know where you stand. The matches in the preparation were good right away and we also won that first match against Ipswich. Then you immediately have plus points within the club and you’re already in. If it continues like this, we can have a great year.”

After starting on the bench against Ipswich, Gakpo is hopeful of making the starting lineup when Liverpool face Brentford at Anfield in this weekend’s Premier League fixture. The Dutch international shone at Euro 2024, netting three goals in six appearances for the Netherlands.
