Last season, the Brazil international struggled, with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher even suggesting that the 32-year-old should consider retirement. However, after a promising performance against Manchester City in the Community Shield on Saturday, manager Erik ten Hag has praised the former Real Madrid star.
Ten Hag told United’s website, “He has had a strong pre-season and is very fit right now. As a team, we are working well together, which helps Case a lot. This allows him to showcase his skills and demonstrates his significance for the game and our team.”
He continued, “He is a major leader for us and crucial to the team. Whether attacking or defending, we are united.”
While Casemiro’s recent display proved he still has quality, the real test will be maintaining these high standards throughout the season. Last year, he was often one of several weak links for United, so it’s uncertain if this performance is a sign of consistent improvement or merely a brief highlight.
Casemiro will have another opportunity to prove himself when United face Fulham at Old Trafford on Friday night. They will then travel to Brighton to complete their August fixtures.
