David De Gea has officially joined Fiorentina on a free transfer, marking his return to football after 14 months out of the game. The 33-year-old former Manchester United goalkeeper has signed a one-year contract with the Italian club, with an option to extend for a further 12 months.

De Gea has been without a club since leaving Manchester United last summer after failing to agree on a contract extension.De Gea’s last competitive match was over 400 days ago in the 2023 FA Cup final, where Manchester United was defeated by Manchester City. During his 12-year tenure at United, he made 545 appearances, broke the club’s record for clean sheets, and became the highest appearance-maker for a goalkeeper.

The Spaniard won five major trophies with United, including the Premier League title in 2013, and earned numerous individual honors, such as the Premier League Golden Glove in 2017-18 and 2022-23. Fiorentina, who finished eighth in Serie A last season and reached the Europa Conference League final, will begin their new campaign on August 17 against Parma.
