The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), the governing body of Ligue 1, has issued a statement rejecting involvement with “clearly fake accounts” on social media that appear to be promoting the league in a dubious manner.

Following the departures of major stars Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in 2023 and 2024, respectively, Ligue 1 faced challenges in securing a lucrative TV deal. Despite these difficulties, a significant contract worth €500 million (£428m/$546m) annually was finalized with DAZN and beIN Sports, though the league’s marketability has been a concern.

The LFP’s statement read: “In light of recent unfounded rumors regarding social media posts from evidently fake and unreliable accounts, the Professional Football League firmly denies any involvement in these activities. The LFP, along with clubs, official broadcasters, and partners, remains dedicated to preparing for the highly anticipated 2024/2025 season, which promises to be thrilling for football enthusiasts.”

The 2024-25 Ligue 1 season will kick off next Friday, August 16, with reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain facing Le Havre. Marseille, Monaco, and Lille will also be in action the following day.
