UEFA has announced that Spain captain and recent Milan acquisition Álvaro Morata will serve a one-match suspension for a chant he performed during La Roja’s EURO 2024 celebrations.
In the wake of Spain’s victory in the EURO 2024 final over England, Morata and Manchester City’s Rodri were recorded chanting “Gibraltar is Spanish” during the celebration in Madrid. This led to a formal complaint from the Gibraltar FA.
Gibraltar, located on Spain’s southern coast, has been a British Overseas Territory since the 18th century.
The incident occurred on July 15 in front of a large crowd following Spain’s 2-1 win over England. UEFA has since handed both players a one-match suspension at the international level, meaning they will miss Spain’s Nations League opener against Serbia on September 5.
This suspension does not affect their club eligibility. Morata is scheduled to join his new Milan teammates on August 10.
