Throughout most of 2024, the right-back was frequently linked with a move to Real Madrid, but no transfer materialized. After representing England at Euro 2024, the 25-year-old rejoined the Liverpool squad, where teammate Darwin Nunez took the opportunity to mention the Spanish giants in conversation.
As Alexander-Arnold enters the final year of his Liverpool contract, speculation about his future has intensified. He has yet to sign a new contract, and if he does not extend his stay at Anfield, he will be eligible to negotiate with European clubs starting in January. It remains to be seen whether new manager Arne Slot can persuade him to commit to a new deal.
Slot, who took over from Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool’s manager earlier this summer, had discussed his plans for Alexander-Arnold before the Euros. He expressed his enthusiasm about the player’s return but did not address contract discussions. Slot commented to The Athletic, “We focused on how I envision him playing and fitting into our style rather than on his commitment. At that time, he was primarily focused on the Euros. I’ve seen recent clips showing he is in excellent shape, and I’m excited to see him in training.”
Liverpool, under Slot, will conclude their pre-season with a match against Sevilla at Anfield on Sunday before beginning their Premier League campaign against newly-promoted Ipswich Town on August 17.
