Atalanta and Italy faced a troubling situation as Gianluca Scamacca was stretchered off with what could be a severe knee injury, just days before their European Super Cup clash with Real Madrid.
The injury occurred during a pre-season friendly against newly-promoted Serie A team Parma. Scamacca was attempting to control a ball while Parma’s goalkeeper came out to challenge him, and he appeared to get his studs caught in the ground, falling awkwardly.
The injury looked quite serious as Scamacca immediately grasped the outside of his left knee, indicating a possible sprain or even ligament damage. He was promptly taken off the field by medical staff for further examination, with initial reports raising concerns.
Atalanta is set to start their season with the European Super Cup match against Real Madrid on August 14, having earned their spot as Europa League champions against the Champions League holders.
