Daniele De Rossi has praised the arrival of Artem Dovbyk and Matias Soulé following their debuts in a friendly match. De Rossi highlighted that both players were eager to join Roma, even turning down higher offers from more prestigious clubs.
In today’s match against Olympiacos in Rieti, Roma took the lead with a penalty from Lorenzo Pellegrini, only to have it equalized shortly after by another penalty, ending the game 1-1.
De Rossi remarked, “It was crucial for us to make progress, both physically and in terms of our mindset. Playing in front of a crowd was essential, as we needed to experience a vibrant atmosphere before the Cagliari match.”
He added, “We treated this friendly as though it mattered, and the players responded well.”
The game featured summer signing Soulé in the starting lineup, with Dovbyk joining at halftime along with Paulo Dybala, forming a promising attacking trio for the season.
“The more we move forward, the more I see new faces,” De Rossi said with a smile. “We need that passionate support for our players. Some have left, others may have been forgotten, but it’s important for fans to support everyone because they’ve all contributed to this team.”
De Rossi also praised Dovbyk’s decision to join Roma, noting that a direct conversation with owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin helped Dovbyk see Roma as the right fit for his career progression.
“Everyone plays a role in convincing players,” De Rossi explained. “While directors and CEOs handle the financial aspects, I talk to the players. Every coach does this to finalize transfers. In Dovbyk’s case, Dan Friedkin was crucial, and we’re all thankful for that. He’s a promising talent who will need time but has adapted quickly.”
De Rossi concluded by emphasizing that all the new arrivals truly wanted to be at Roma, even if it meant turning down more lucrative offers from other clubs.
Roma will now head to England for a tour, where they will train and play several friendly matches, starting with Coventry on August 6 and Everton on August 10.
