Former Newcastle United midfielder Tommy Cassidy has died at the age of 73 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Cassidy, who played 239 games for the Magpies from 1970 to 1980, was honored by the club for his significant contributions. Born in Belfast, Cassidy began his career with Glentoran before moving to Newcastle, where he became a fan favorite.

He played a key role in leading Newcastle to the 1974 FA Cup final and the 1976 League Cup final, scoring 28 goals during his time at the club. After his stint with Newcastle, Cassidy joined Burnley in 1980 and later moved to APOEL in Cyprus, where he concluded his playing career. Internationally, Cassidy earned 24 caps for Northern Ireland, including representing his country at the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

Following his playing days, Cassidy embarked on a managerial career, with notable spells at APOEL, Gateshead, Glentoran, and Blyth Spartans. Newcastle United and Northern Ireland have both paid tribute to Cassidy, remembering him as a talented footballer and a cherished individual.
