Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana accused Enzo Fernandez of promoting “uninhibited racism” after Fernandez live streamed a racially offensive song from Argentina’s team bus following their Copa America final victory over Colombia. The incident caused several Chelsea players to unfollow Fernandez on social media.

According to Sky Sports, Fernandez offered a face-to-face apology to his teammates when he rejoined the squad after his post-season break. This direct and personal apology represents a significant step in addressing the controversy as the team enters a new era under head coach Enzo Maresca. Chelsea captain Reece James and Axel Disasi were instrumental in mediating the situation.

To show genuine remorse, Fernandez has pledged a substantial donation to an anti-discrimination charity, with Chelsea planning to match his donation through their foundation, reinforcing their commitment to fighting racism.

Chelsea initiated disciplinary action against Fernandez following the incident. The club has now concluded the matter, acknowledging Fernandez’s proactive public and private apologies as sufficient. However, FIFA’s investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

Fernandez resumed training with the Blues on Monday during their pre-season tour in the U.S. and may play when Chelsea faces Club America in Atlanta on Wednesday, with upcoming matches against Manchester City and Real Madrid in Columbus and Charlotte, respectively.
