Christian Pulisic, a proud graduate of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, was able to move to Europe shortly after his 16th birthday, thanks to his Croatian heritage. This early transition allowed him to start his European career sooner than the typical age of 18. Borussia Dortmund took advantage of this opportunity, integrating him into their U-17 squad in February 2015. Since then, Pulisic’s career has been on an upward trajectory.
After spending four years with Borussia Dortmund, Pulisic transferred to Chelsea in 2019. Following a less impressive four-year stint by his own high standards, he moved to AC Milan in the summer of 2023 on a four-year contract that will keep him at San Siro until 2027.
Despite playing for some of Europe’s top clubs, Pulisic has faced challenges, including anti-American sentiment and a “culture shock” upon arriving in Italy. In an interview with CBS Sports, he reflected on his decade-long experience in Europe. “Yeah it’s different, I’ve been in Europe for over 10 years now which sounds crazy,” he said. “It’s difficult at the beginning, I think people definitely look at this guy and say you know he’s an American guy I don’t want him taking my spot. You need a strong mentality and that’s been one of my strengths.”
Pulisic also described his initial difficulties adjusting to Italy, noting, “Not caring what people think, showing people what I can do and hopefully, they’ll accept me for who I am. It can be a bit of a culture shock um like I said I’ve been in Europe for so long I’m almost used to it. However, at the beginning of last season, I remember when I didn’t speak a word of Italian you go into the first training sessions and the coach is yelling things.”
Nevertheless, Pulisic has adapted well to Serie A. Last season, he played a crucial role for Milan, contributing 15 goals and 11 assists in 50 appearances. After a disappointing Copa America with the USMNT, he is eager to make an impact in pre-season friendlies against Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Barcelona.
