Former Manchester United player Paddy McNair has signed with MLS side San Diego FC as a free agent. The 29-year-old Northern Ireland international, who spent five years at Old Trafford before leaving in 2016, will be loaned to West Brom until the end of 2024. McNair joined United’s academy at age 14, transitioning from midfielder to defender under youth coach Paul McGuinness.

Limited to 27 first-team appearances, he was later signed by Sunderland and subsequently Middlesbrough, where he won the Player of the Year award in 2021. McNair signed a three-year deal with San Diego FC after his contract with Middlesbrough ended. Due to the pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa, he will return to England for a six-month loan with West Brom.

McNair expressed excitement about joining San Diego and playing in MLS, saying it felt like a special opportunity. He is the fifth signing in San Diego FC’s history, a club founded by British-Egyptian businessman Mohamed Mansour.
