Alex Fletcher retired from football at the age of 25 after overcoming a coma and a fractured skull from a crash into an advertising hoarding in 2022. The incident occurred while Fletcher was playing for Bath City in a National League South match against Dulwich Hamlet. After emergency surgery and relearning to walk, he returned to the pitch with Weston-super-Mare last October.
However, Fletcher recently announced his retirement on social media, citing ongoing issues with balance, timing, coordination, and permanent deafness in his left ear. Fletcher started his career at Plymouth Argyle, making 24 appearances, and had loan spells at Torquay United and Aldershot Town before moving to Tiverton Town and Bath City in 2021.
Weston-super-Mare manager Scott Bartlett praised Fletcher, highlighting his intelligence and strong family support, especially after the birth of his child. Fletcher expressed gratitude for returning to football but admitted he could no longer play effectively. “Carrying on playing football would be one step too far, and I’m really gutted about it,” he said, noting that essential components of his game were missing.
10 months on from a collision with an advertising hoarding which left Alex Fletcher in a coma, he made his return to the Bath City side against Hampton & Richmond last weekend.
