Reyna’s tenure at Borussia Dortmund may conclude this summer after five years with the Bundesliga team. According to Sky Sports Germany’s Patrick Berger, the USMNT star has “no future” at the club, as Julian Brandt and the promising Kjell Watjen have surpassed him in the team hierarchy. Additionally, Dortmund’s interest in Rayan Cherki from Lyon would further diminish Reyna’s chances. A transfer to Marseille is a viable option, with the Ligue 1 club previously expressing interest in the 21-year-old.
Last season, Reyna only started one Bundesliga match for Dortmund before being loaned to Nottingham Forest in January. However, he failed to make an impact in the Premier League, prompting Dortmund’s decision to consider a permanent transfer. Marseille, having shown interest before, might renew their pursuit of Reyna. The Ligue 1 side has already made a significant transfer by acquiring Mason Greenwood from Manchester United for €31.6 million (£27m/$34m) this summer.
Reyna has expressed his desire for regular playing time next season. In an interview with The Athletic in June, he stated: “I just want to go somewhere that is at the highest possible level, but still play an important role, get consistent minutes and be an important player for any team, whether it’s at Dortmund or somewhere else. I’m just looking for the right fit for me, playing at a high level and a club that wants me — where I feel valued.”
Reyna did not travel with the Dortmund squad for their pre-season tour of Asia, but he is expected to join the team in Japan on July 22 after his Copa America commitments with the USMNT. While a summer move seems likely, his destination for the 2024-25 season remains uncertain.
