Manchester United have confirmed Mason Greenwood’s transfer to Marseille with a brief 57-word statement. The 22-year-old forward signed a contract until 2029 in a deal worth over £30 million. United will receive an initial £27 million plus £3.2 million in add-ons, along with a 50% sell-on clause.

Greenwood, who will wear No. 10 at Marseille, spent last season on loan at Getafe, where he won Player of the Year. Despite opposition from some fans and Marseille’s mayor, the Ligue 1 club secured the transfer. Greenwood’s move follows United’s £52 million acquisition of Leny Yoro from Lille. Greenwood, who joined United’s academy at six, made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for the club.

He was suspended in January 2022 amid legal issues, but charges were dropped in February 2023. Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi, formerly of Brighton, has vowed to support Greenwood publicly. Greenwood’s debut for Marseille could be on August 3 in a friendly against Sunderland at Bradford City’s Valley Parade, bringing him back to his hometown.
