Mason Greenwood, 22, has arrived in France to finalize his transfer to Marseille from Manchester United, in a deal potentially worth over £30 million. Marseille arranged a private jet for Greenwood, who touched down in Marseille around 11:00 PM local time. The transfer includes an initial fee of £27 million, £3.2 million in add-ons, and a 50% sell-on clause for United.
Greenwood, who joined United’s academy at six, made his senior debut in 2019 and became a first-team regular. However, he was suspended in January 2022 amid charges of attempted rape, assault, and controlling behavior, all of which were dropped in February 2023. Greenwood spent last season on loan at Getafe, where he excelled and won the Player of the Year award. Despite interest from multiple clubs, Marseille moved quickly to secure his services.
The transfer faced opposition from some fans and Marseille mayor Benoit Payan, who opposed the move publicly. Marseille’s coach, Roberto De Zerbi, expressed his support for Greenwood, stating he would defend him as he considers his players like his sons. Greenwood’s debut for Marseille could be on August 3 in a friendly against Sunderland at Bradford City’s Valley Parade.
