The 22-year-old forward is poised to leave Manchester United this summer following a successful loan stint at Getafe in 2023-24, where he was named Player of the Season. Several European clubs have shown interest.
Ligue 1 powerhouse Marseille appeared to be leading the race, with new coach Roberto De Zerbi reportedly endorsing the move. However, discontented fans have launched an online #GreenwoodNotWelcome campaign.
Marseille’s mayor has also voiced opposition to the potential signing, referring to past allegations against Greenwood, which were dropped in February 2023. Benoit Payan stated, amid reports of a €32 million (£27m/$35m) deal, “Greenwood’s conduct is reprehensible and unacceptable.”
According to Corriere dello Sport, Greenwood is “hesitating, affected by the backlash from Marseille supporters and the mayor’s stance.” A decision is expected soon, as the England international, capped once, seeks clarity heading into the 2024-25 season as pre-season preparations commence.
