Throughout Euro 2024, England has faced criticism for not always performing at their best. Despite this, the Three Lions have consistently managed to win when it counts most. This mirrors Real Madrid’s approach, where, despite their star-studded lineup, they have become European champions by securing victories under pressure. Notably, they made several comebacks to clinch the Champions League title in 2021-22. They were on the verge of elimination in last season’s semi-finals until Joselu’s late goals against Bayern Munich, and even faced a challenging first half in the final against Borussia Dortmund before winning 2-0.
Speaking to The Guardian, Watkins explained: “Real Madrid in a Champions League match are comfortable without the ball, confident that they will score when they get it. I see the same in us. We are tough to beat and only need one chance to win. Even if we aren’t at our best, our world-class talent can still secure that crucial goal.”
Regarding Bellingham’s potential for the Ballon d’Or, Watkins added: “Jude deserves to win the Ballon d’Or, no matter what happens. His maturity, confidence, and presence on the field are exceptional. I’ve watched him evolve from his days at Birmingham, where he already played like a seasoned professional. During one of my early England camps, he was only 16 but carried himself with remarkable confidence. His achievements since then are no surprise.”
