The future of Didier Deschamps, the manager who led France to a World Cup victory in 2018, is under scrutiny after France’s 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 semi-final on Tuesday. Despite taking an early lead through Randal Kolo Muani, France was unable to hold off Spain, who scored twice in quick succession through Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo to secure a spot in the final for the first time since 2012.

With France failing to secure another major tournament victory despite being one of the pre-tournament favourites, Deschamps’ performance has come into question. However, FFF President Philippe Diallo confirmed that Deschamps will remain in his position at least until his contract expires in 2026.

In an interview with L’Equipe, Diallo stated, “I don’t see any reason to question his contract. The past results speak in his favour and the objectives have been achieved. Didier will continue his mission. We will talk together in the coming days to analyse in more depth what we lacked during this semi-final and what would have allowed us to go higher.”

France, the two-time World Cup winners, will return to action in September with back-to-back Nations League matches against Italy and Belgium.
