The Real Madrid forward has struggled since fracturing his nose during Euro 2024’s opener against Austria, playing with a protective mask that has visibly affected his performance. He described the mask as a “nightmare” and admitted he hasn’t regained full fitness, needing a proper pre-season to reach optimal condition.
During the quarter-final against Portugal, Mbappe was substituted due to fatigue, sparking concerns about his ability to contribute effectively in the upcoming semi-final. Former France defender Frank Leboeuf expressed worry, suggesting Mbappe is operating well below his peak and should be replaced by a fully fit player.
Speaking with Get French Football News, Leboeuf emphasized, “If you are injured and you can’t play at 100%, you can only play at 50%, then you shouldn’t play. For me, you’re not serving France well and you’re not serving yourself well, because you’re criticised, you can’t play to your best level. I can’t see the use in playing Mbappe at 50% – I think that Bradley Barcola would do better.“
Coach Didier Deschamps faces a dilemma ahead of the Spain clash. Mbappe’s presence provides a psychological lift and threatens opponents, yet his current form and fitness levels raise doubts about starting him. Despite publicly supporting Mbappe, Deschamps may need to reassess tactics given the player’s physical condition and recent performances.
