The World Cup-winning goalkeeper has openly expressed his desire to join Javier Mascherano’s Argentina squad in Paris. He has previously secured international titles with his country, including the Copa America and Finalissima.
However, Aston Villa has decided against releasing him for the Paris tournament, citing his recent participation in another Copa event this summer. The 31-year-old has acknowledged this decision and is now expected to join the rest of Unai Emery’s squad for pre-season training.
Former Villa scout Bryan King explained Villa’s decision to Villa News: “Of course, it would be lovely for him to play in the Olympics and perhaps win gold. However, his job is with the Argentina senior team and most importantly Aston Villa Football Club. They pay his wages, this is where he works and this is what makes him an international goalkeeper. I think Villa made the right decision on this, I could never see the club agreeing to that, he would have missed the entirety of pre-season.”
Villa is gearing up for a significant 2024-25 season and is keen to ensure all players are fully prepared. Following a top-four finish in the Premier League last season, Emery’s team is aiming to include Champions League matches in their upcoming schedule.
