As reported by The Athletic, staff were notified on Wednesday afternoon about upcoming layoffs, driven by cost-cutting recommendations from consultancy firm Interpath Advisory. This decision will affect nearly a quarter of United’s 1,112 employees. The report indicates that INEOS plans to implement these cuts before the 2024-25 season begins.

INEOS, which acquired a 25 percent stake in the Premier League club in December, views United’s workforce as excessively large compared to competitors. For instance, Arsenal’s records show an average monthly workforce of 689, while Manchester City employs 520, less than half of United’s numbers. By reducing their staff, United aims to achieve savings that will help them comply with Premier League and UEFA financial regulations and improve their efficiency in the transfer market.

These layoffs are part of a broader series of cost-cutting measures initiated by Ratcliffe and INEOS since their takeover. Several senior staff members have already had their club credit cards revoked, and employees were required to contribute to travel expenses for the FA Cup final in May.

As INEOS continues to bring United’s spending under control, they have strengthened their efforts to restore the club to the top of English football by appointing Dan Ashworth as director of football. Ashworth is expected to focus on recruitment, with Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee reportedly close to joining the team.
