Chelsea announce acquisition of Barcelona prodigy Marc Guiu

Marc Guiu, who scored twice in seven games for Barcelona in 2023-24, has joined Chelsea on a five-year deal with an option for an additional year.

Marc Guiu, having netted twice in seven appearances for Barcelona during the 2023-24 season, has officially joined Chelsea after signing a five-year contract that extends until 2029, with an option for an additional year until 2030.

Under Todd Boehly’s stewardship, Chelsea’s transfer strategy has predominantly centered on nurturing young talent, and the acquisition of 18-year-old Guiu underscores this approach. The Blues activated the Spanish prodigy’s £5 million ($6.3m) release clause, marking a shrewd investment in his substantial long-term potential.

Expressing his excitement upon joining Chelsea, Guiu remarked in his debut interview on the club’s official website, “It brings me immense joy to sign for Chelsea. I struggled to sleep last night ahead of the journey here because I was so excited.” He added, “Ever since I was small, it was my dream to play in the Premier League and be successful in England. Now I have the opportunity to join Chelsea and I will work my hardest to be successful for the club. I think what’s most important [to start with] is that I adapt to my surroundings, which I’m sure will be easy, and then of course I want to win the Champions League and the Premier League for Chelsea.”

“On a personal level,” Guiu continued, “I want to help the team as much as I can by scoring lots of goals and I want to become the best centre forward in the world.”

Guiu notably clinched victory for Barcelona against Athletic Club with a crucial goal off the bench last October, followed by a scoring performance in a Champions League group stage match against Antwerp a few weeks later.
