Napoli may need to reassess their strategy regarding star player Victor Osimhen, as no clubs have yet expressed interest in acquiring the Nigerian, despite Napoli’s intentions to sell him this summer.
Throughout the 2023-24 season, reports indicated Napoli’s readiness to cash in on Osimhen, despite his role as the club’s top goal scorer over the past two seasons, including during their 2022-23 Scudetto-winning campaign.
Last December, the 25-year-old extended his contract with Napoli until 2026, which includes a release clause estimated between €120m and €130m.
Despite expectations of interest from clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United, and Paris Saint-Germain, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that no formal offers have materialized.
This presents a potential longer-term issue for Napoli and new coach Antonio Conte, who may have counted on Osimhen’s sale to fund several other summer transfer targets, possibly including Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku.
Osimhen’s substantial annual wage of around €10m under his new contract could also pose financial challenges for Napoli moving forward, especially if they aim to undergo a rebuilding phase under Conte this summer.
Club President Aurelio De Laurentiis is awaiting input from sporting director Giovanni Manna and Osimhen’s representatives before deciding on the next course of action. However, La Gazzetta suggests that Napoli might need to reconsider their asking price if they hope to finalize a deal this summer.
