The prolific England international ended his long-standing association with Tottenham in the summer of 2023 in an effort to finally win a major trophy. Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich were seen as a near-certain route to silverware, yet Kane’s debut season in Germany, despite netting 44 goals in all competitions, concluded without any major honors.

Kane might be feeling a bit cursed, but former Spurs star Anderton, in an interview with GOAL through William Hill, expressed sympathy for the 30-year-old striker: “You have to feel sorry for him. What a great guy, what a player, and what loyalty he showed to Spurs all those years. I don’t blame him for moving. It was almost the easy choice to go to Munich, win something, and maybe come back. I wish he was still at Spurs, especially with the way Ange [Postecoglou] plays; it would be amazing. I believe he will win a trophy. He truly deserves it for all he has done individually. Maybe this summer!”

Asked if the ongoing trophy drought and the endless questions it brings would be frustrating for Kane, Anderton added: “I think it will really bother him this year, considering how it happened. He’s done great at Munich, and people in Germany love him, he’s been outstanding. But then Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen came and did the unthinkable. He must be wondering, ‘what have I done to deserve this?’ There’s no doubt he’s thinking that. He’s very level-headed, but it must gnaw at him.”

Kane is currently with the England squad for Euro 2024, seeking another shot at a trophy. He has scored once in three group stage games but has faced calls for him to be benched as Gareth Southgate struggles to find the right spark. Anderton, when asked if Kane is the type of player who should never be benched, said: “It’s tough to bench him. When [Ollie] Watkins came on the other night [against Denmark] and made that run behind, it made people think, ‘okay, maybe something different’. But Kane is your captain and top scorer, so it’s very difficult to drop him. I’d like to see him make more runs in behind, especially if we aren’t playing someone like [Anthony] Gordon to stretch the pitch. Right now, we’re too easy to play against, with little movement. Kane should stay in the team, but we need to stretch the pitch and ask him to do more of that himself.”

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have enjoyed almost untouchable status for club and country, and Kane seems to be in that category. Pressed on whether England overlooks his occasional dip in form because of his potential on any given day, Anderton agreed: “I think so. He’s your talisman and top scorer – he scored 50 goals this season for Bayern and England and will always find the net. You have to create chances for him. We’ve been dull to watch with no creativity. Kane is crucial for us with his international quality. It’s different when you get chances at that level. In the first game [against Serbia], the keeper made a great save, and he scored in the second game [against Denmark]. We have to get better. The last Euros, we reached the final by getting the job done, not by being entertaining. Gareth [Southgate] has pointed out that Kalvin Phillips is the missing link. That’s worrying if it’s the difference between doing well or not.”

England has seen another favorable draw open up at this summer’s European Championship, similar to the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020, with Slovakia next in the last-16. The likes of Spain, Germany, Portugal, and France are on the other side of the draw, potentially giving Kane and his teammates a clear path to the ultimate prize if they can build confidence and momentum.
