Wayne Rooney is set to collaborate with Plymouth’s existing backroom team, working closely with Keith Nancekivell and Simon Ireland. Rooney has brought in his old sidekick Pete Shuttleworth but will rely on Nancekivell and Ireland at Home Park.  Nancekivell has served as caretaker manager since Ian Foster’s departure on April 1, while Ireland has been Plymouth’s first-team coach since March.

Carl Robinson, previously linked with a role, has joined MLS outfit Atlanta United. Last month, Rooney signed a three-year deal with Plymouth, despite his challenging stint at Birmingham City, where he won only two of 15 games, contributing to the club’s relegation. Rooney’s tenure at Birmingham saw the club plummet from sixth to 22nd in the Championship. Despite Birmingham’s struggles, Rooney, 38, has been given another opportunity in the division by Plymouth, who narrowly avoided relegation this season.

Before the Championship season starts, Rooney has been working as a pundit for the BBC at the Euros, discussing England’s performance under Gareth Southgate. England, currently with four points after two group-stage games, needs a win against Slovenia to secure the top spot in Group C and advance to the Round of 16.
