Earlier this year, Manchester United’s kitchen and culinary services faced heavy criticism after serving raw chicken to 30 guests at a SHE event organized by the North West Safety Health Environment Show. Following this incident, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) downgraded the club’s hygiene rating from five stars to one, indicating that significant improvements were needed in food safety and standards, though the cleanliness and condition of the facilities were still considered ‘good.’

Recently, United’s kitchen services underwent another hygiene inspection by the FSA. According to the Daily Mail, inspectors acknowledged improvements in food safety and hygiene practices but found new issues with the facilities. The report highlighted mould inside dishwashers, grease dripping from the walls, and rotting metal shelves in the storeroom. As a result, the club did not regain its five-star rating but did improve to four stars, a significant increase from the previous one-star rating.

A Manchester United spokesperson told the Daily Mail, “As the report states, significant improvement work was undertaken by the club to increase our rating to four stars between November and February. This is an incremental process, and we are confident we will regain our five-star rating at the earliest possible opportunity.”

The club believes they will achieve a five-star rating at the next inspection, which they aim to schedule as soon as possible, acknowledging that it is rare for an establishment to leap from one star to five stars in one step.
