Canada Soccer announced they were in contact with governing sports bodies after defender Moise Bombito received racist abuse online following Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Canada on Thursday evening.
With goals from Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez, Argentina secured three points, placing the defending champions at the top of Group A while Canada remains at the bottom.
After the match, Bombito posted on social media, “My beautiful Canada,” and added, “No room for that bs,” showing resilience despite the abusive comments directed at him.
Earlier this week, FIFA stated that its social media tools designed to protect players from online abuse would be available to all 211 member associations and their teams.
In a statement, Canada Soccer expressed deep concern over the racist remarks aimed at Bombito, saying, “Canada Soccer is aware of and deeply disturbed by racist comments made online and directed at one of our men’s national team players following tonight’s match,”
Canada will return to the field on June 25 to face Peru in their second Group Stage game, with Bombito and the team seeking their first three points of the tournament.
