David Seaman advises Aaron Ramsdale on transfer dilemma

At 26, Aaron Ramsdale is still young for a top goalkeeper, but after losing his starting position at Arsenal to David Raya in the 2023-24 season, he is now considering his future.

At 26, England international Aaron Ramsdale remains young for a top-tier goalkeeper, suggesting he has plenty of time to establish himself as a No. 1. However, after losing his spot to David Raya at Arsenal in the 2023-24 season and making only 11 appearances across all competitions, Ramsdale must now consider his future. Currently on Euro 2024 duty with England, Ramsdale has been receiving advice from former Arsenal and England goalkeeper David Seaman.

Seaman, who is participating in a three-part mini-series with Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel for Frank’s RedHot Sauce, emphasized the importance of Ramsdale playing regularly. Speaking to GOAL, Seaman advised, “He needs to play. If he’s not playing, he’s going to start falling down the pecking order for England. At the moment, that doesn’t look like it’s going to be at Arsenal. Do I want him to leave the club? No, for selfish reasons because having two good goalkeepers is always good for the club. But he has got to go and play somewhere. I can’t imagine it will be on loan, it will be a permanent deal. My advice is he’s got to play. He’s too good to be a No.2.”

Considering the lack of Premier League options at Ramsdale’s level, he might look abroad, following in the footsteps of fellow England players Kane and Jude Bellingham, who have moved to Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, respectively. Seaman remarked on the possibility of Ramsdale seeking a new start overseas, saying, “He might go abroad. Aaron is only 26, so he has got a lot of options and a lot of time – whether it is in the Premier League or abroad. Ideally I would like to see him in the Premier League still, but he’s got to play. When you don’t play, your career almost goes on pause. It’s tough. There are certain goalkeepers that are good No.2s, you look at [Stefan] Ortega at Man City, he doesn’t kick up a fuss and as soon as Ederson is fit he’s back in. He comes in and plays the cup games and has shown us what a good goalkeeper he is. With Aaron, he’s too good to be a No.2 and needs to be a No.1 somewhere.”

Ramsdale’s contract with Arsenal runs until 2026, with an option for an additional year, allowing the club to demand a significant transfer fee. However, he is unlikely to showcase his talents at Euro 2024, as Jordan Pickford remains England’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Frank’s RedHot Sauce will bring a touch of Germany to London on Thursday, June 20th, by transforming the Bermondsey Bierkeller beer hall into Frank’s-Furt for the Denmark v England game. Fans can enjoy the new spicy matchday drink, the Flager, at this ultimate viewing event.
