Robbie Savage has been appointed as the new manager of Macclesfield FC after another club attempted to recruit him. The 49-year-old former Welsh midfielder, known for his playing stints at Manchester United, Leicester City, and Birmingham, was previously the director of football at the non-league club.

Savage’s appointment follows the departure of Michael Clegg, who left by mutual consent despite leading Macclesfield to the Northern Premier League play-off final. The club’s statement highlighted Savage’s achievements, including two promotions and an FA Trophy semi-final, and emphasized their commitment to keeping him. Savage will be supported by Peter Band, returning as Assistant Manager, and former Leicester teammate Emile Heskey in a position-specific role.

The club aims for success under Savage’s leadership, with a new First Team Coach to be appointed soon. Macclesfield FC, a Phoenix club of the defunct Macclesfield Town, has seen rapid progress since its formation. Savage, who joined the board in 2021, now becomes the club’s eighth manager in four years, following a notable playing career and recent directorial success.
